Our Ranking Methodology
We scored each airline across five categories: base fare value, baggage fee transparency, on-time performance, seat comfort, and customer service. We analyzed over 50,000 passenger reviews, six months of pricing data, and our own team's experiences across 40 flights.
Each category is scored out of 10, then weighted. Base fare counts double because price is the main reason people fly budget. Hidden fees are weighted heavily because a cheap ticket means nothing if your total cost balloons at checkout.
Search flights to EuropeRyanair: The Love-Hate Giant โ 7/10
Ryanair is Europe's largest budget carrier and often the cheapest option by a wide margin. Base fares of 10-30 euros are common on popular routes like London-Dublin, Berlin-Barcelona, and Milan-Brussels. Their network covers over 200 destinations and their on-time record is surprisingly strong at 88%.
The catch: fees for everything. A 10kg cabin bag costs 8-12 euros per flight, checked luggage runs 20-30 euros, and seat selection is 4-8 euros. Priority boarding at 6 euros is almost essential to guarantee overhead bin space. Best routes: anything to and from Ireland, Spain, or Italy. Avoid for: long legs needing comfort โ the 30-inch seat pitch is brutal.
easyJet: The Balanced Choice โ 8/10
easyJet strikes the best balance between price and experience. Fares are 10-20% higher than Ryanair but the included cabin bag is larger, the app is excellent, and allocated seating means no gate stampede. Their hub airports like Gatwick, Geneva, and Nice are more convenient than Ryanair's secondary options.
Hidden fees: checked bags cost 7-32 euros depending on route and timing. The Flexi fare at 30-50 euros extra includes free changes and fast-track security, which is genuine value for uncertain plans. Best routes: London to southern France, Switzerland, and the Canary Islands. Their Amsterdam-London route is one of Europe's best-value flights.
Wizz Air: Eastern Europe Champion โ 7.5/10
Wizz Air dominates routes to Budapest, Krakow, Bucharest, Sofia, and Tirana with fares that undercut everyone. A Budapest-London flight regularly appears at 20-25 euros one way. Their fleet of new Airbus A321neos offers decent legroom and a modern cabin feel.
The downside is their aggressive upselling. The Wizz Priority bundle at 17-30 euros is almost mandatory to bring a proper carry-on. Their customer service ranks lowest in our survey with long response times. Best routes: anything to Hungary, Poland, Romania, or the Balkans. The Wizz Discount Club at 30 euros per year saves 5-10 euros per flight โ worth it if you fly them more than three times.
Vueling: Mediterranean Specialist โ 7.5/10
Vueling is the budget arm of IAG (which owns British Airways and Iberia) and it shows in the slightly more polished experience. They dominate routes from Barcelona, with strong coverage across Spain, Italy, and France. Barcelona-Rome fares hover around 30-50 euros.
Baggage is their weakness โ a checked bag costs 25-45 euros and prices jump sharply if booked at the airport. The Optima fare at 20-35 euros extra includes a checked bag, seat selection, and flexibility, making it worthwhile for most travelers. Best routes: anything originating from Barcelona or connecting Spanish cities domestically. Their Barcelona-Paris CDG route offers solid value.
Norwegian: Best Overall Experience โ 8.5/10
Norwegian leads our ranking for the best combination of price, comfort, and reliability. Their Dreamliner fleet on long-haul routes offers the widest budget seats in Europe, and short-haul fares from Scandinavian hubs are competitive at 25-60 euros. Oslo-London, Stockholm-Barcelona, and Copenhagen-Nice are standout routes.
Hidden fees are more transparent than competitors. The LowFare+ bundle at 30-50 euros includes checked bag, seat selection, and meal โ genuinely good value. Their on-time performance exceeds 85%. Best routes: Scandinavia to anywhere, plus London Gatwick routes. They lost some network breadth after their 2020 restructuring but quality improved.
Eurowings and Transavia: Solid Mid-Pack โ 7/10
Eurowings, Lufthansa's budget brand, offers reliable service on German routes with fares from 30-60 euros. Their BIZclass on short-haul flights includes lounge access and a middle-seat-free guarantee from 100-150 euros, which appeals to business travelers wanting budget pricing with comfort.
Transavia, backed by Air France-KLM, covers French and Dutch routes well. Amsterdam to Lisbon, Marseille, and Marrakech are popular options at 40-70 euros. Both airlines include reasonable cabin bag allowances and avoid the worst fee traps. Their main drawback is smaller networks compared to Ryanair or easyJet.
Pegasus: Turkey's Hidden Value โ 7/10
Pegasus Airlines is Europe's most overlooked budget carrier. Based in Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen airport, they offer astonishingly cheap fares from Turkey to dozens of European cities. London to Istanbul regularly drops to 40-60 euros one way, and onward connections within Turkey cost as little as 15 euros.
Seat pitch is tight at 28 inches but their newer A320neos are comfortable enough for the 3-4 hour flights they operate. Checked bags cost 15-25 euros. The biggest hidden gem: Pegasus offers connections to cities like Trabzon, Cappadocia, and Antalya that no other budget carrier reaches from Western Europe. Best for travelers combining European city breaks with Turkish adventures.
